Converting technical drawings into intelligent P&IDs
Sweco utilized Model Broker and DEXPI standard to transform traditional, unintelligent process and instrumentation diagrams into intelligent, information-driven resources. This is highlighted in a recent study that demonstrates how Model Broker led to improved efficiency in large-scale projects, reducing manual effort, enhancing data consistency, and ensuring integration with CAD tools like AutoCAD Plant 3D.

Converting technical drawings into intelligent P&IDs
Modernizing Technical Information Management
Sweco has recently started utilizing Model Broker to create intelligent piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) from drawings available in PDF and DWG formats.

In Sweco’s workflow, the extracted P&ID information was stored in engineering data management systems utilizing the DEXPI standard. This information was then transferred into AutoCAD Plant 3D, allowing further editing and extending the process diagrams directly in the CAD system.

Using Model Broker, the creation of intelligent P&IDs from drawings is highly automated. Thus, a considerable number of resources can be saved in process design projects.

The integration of Model Broker software and DEXPI standards in Sweco’s design workflow enabled an efficient and faster transformation of unintelligent process drawings into intelligent assets. This approach, detailed in a recent Master’s Thesis has unlocked major improvements, including:

  • Significant cost savings, as more automated workflows reduced manual effort. Sweco has estimated savings of over 70%-time reduction when creating intelligent diagrams. This is compared to manually redrawing the P&IDs on a modern CAD software tool.
  • Enhanced Data Consistency ensures seamless communication across design platforms such as AutoCAD Plant 3D.
  • Scalable Approach, as this approach delivered even more promising outcomes in larger and multi-stakeholder projects.
“Data transfer between different project stake holders is crucial for Sweco’s process design workflow. With Model Broker and DEXPI, the exchange of P&ID information is more time efficient. Thus, a considerable number of resources can be saved in process design projects. The results of our study using Model Broker are very promising. Especially in larger projects when a high number of process drawings are available.”
